However, I can’t see a child being bothered by this one bit. I do wonder whether having either the verbs or the nouns capitalised would have been better so that a child can learn to differentiate them or had the nouns one colour and the verbs a different colour would have been better. I noticed that the verbs and nouns in the book are all written in capital letters. You can also see the compassion that he has when he feels sorry and worried for his snowman being left outside all alone. The story is very realistic and you can see Rupert having fun just like most children in the snow. Rupert’s Snowman is an adorable Christmassy book filled with pages of gorgeous snowy scenery and children having fun. When lunchtime came around Rupert was sad because he didn’t want his snowman to be all alone so he came up with a very clever idea. Once at the top Rupert wanted to build a snowman, so the pair set about rolling three balls, finding twigs for arms, stones for eyes and mouth, and of course he needed a hat. After donning their warm clothes, hats, and scarves they set off for the top of the hill so they could sledge back down. Rupert’s mum dug out their sledge so that they could have fun. But wait! What is this? Why is Rupert racing back up the hill? Join him and his mummy as they are forced to embark on a Snowy Adventure Rescue…Ĭhristmas Eve had arrived and so had the snow. Buehner (she calls him Mark) could illustrate for us. She suggested they start some ideas for a story so Mr. She shared with us her personal notebook where there were rough drafts that eventually lead up to the final version before she typed it on the computer. Buehner began by talking about how she creates the story. It was like having the Buehners over for an afternoon of “cold cocoa” and discussing things we love. They set up their books and whispers in the audience gave secrets as to each person’s favorite. Her smile broadened and she felt warm from their encouragement. The Divine Miss M asked if she should give the picture to them right away or wait until after the presentation. Thirty minutes before it was time, they insisted we claim our seats, “we want front row!” Patiently they waited. We arrived early and the children enjoyed exploring JouJou’s, a fabulous toy store with so many unique and inspiring ideas. We did our chores and then headed out for our adventure. This morning the kiddos woke up and were eager to leave….at 6:30. The Divine Miss M was curious enough to do an internet search and with a shrill squee came running upstairs to ask me if I was serious and “can I give them my Snowman at Night picture?”įrom there she *had* to call Charlotte the Great to see if she wanted to come with us to meet her favorite author and illustrator. I told them we were going to meet the Buehners. Yesterday, I picked them up from school and let them know that tomorrow I had a great surprise for them. It was her own version of one of our favorite books, Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner with illustrations by Mark Buehner.

I was a very proud Mom when The Divine Miss M revealed a picture she had drawn and a story that caught her imagination in full force. Sometimes it seems the Universe sets us up for amazing things. Today was the first day we met them face to face. They have been the conversation at our kitchen table during meals and spawned ideas during holiday get-together events. For many years Mark and Caralyn Buehner have tucked my children in at night, sending their imaginations into gear for a night of perfect dreams.
